Considering the research studies over the past three decades, Cycles Approach can be considered as an evidence-based treatment that speech-language pathologists can employ it for treating speech sound disorders with considerable assurance.

What is the cycle approach?

The cycles approach (Hodson and Paden, 1991) focuses on targeting specific processes (e.g. syllable structure, fronting, cluster reduction etc. rather than a single phoneme) with the target changing after an hour of practise has been completed for each cycle.

What is the cycles approach used for?

Cycles approach is suitable for mid and moderate defects in speech, such as some omissions and substitutions. It can also be used to treat severe and profound defects where the child has extensive omissions and many substitutions in speech patterns.

Who is the cycles approach good for?

Large effect sizes for PCC in these two studies indicate that the Cycles Approach is highly effective for treating phonological disorders in preschool-age children. Inconclusive studies used measures of phonological process percentage of occurrence and sound probe scores to determine participant improvements.

What is the cycles approach Asha?

The cycles approach targets phonological pattern errors and is designed for children with highly unintelligible speech who have extensive omissions, some substitutions, and a restricted use of consonants. Treatment is scheduled in cycles ranging from 5 to 16 weeks.

When was the cycles approach created?

Shannon: Yeah, so the cycles approach, just as a basic, is an evidenced way to treat phonological disorders in children. It was developed by Barbara Hodson, I think, maybe in the ’70s.

How long is a cycle in cycles approach?

Cycle One is 6-18 hours. Phonological assessment (Hodson, 2004) is performed at the end of each cycle. Typically 3 or 4 cycles (requiring approximately 30-40 hours) are required for clients with extremely disordered phonological systems to become intelligible.

How do you do Cycle therapy?

Cycles sessions usually take an hour and consist of 7 steps:

  1. Review words from the last session.
  2. Auditory bombardment (1-2 minutes).
  3. Introduction of target words for the session (usually 5-6 words).
  4. Play games requiring the child to practice the target words.
  5. Probe for next session targets.
  6. Repeat auditory bombardment.

How do you select targets for cycles approach?

Choosing Targets: The clinician should select the client’s most stimulable sounds or patterns, so that the child can experience immediate success. Stimulate any non-stimulable sounds for a few minutes during sessions until they become stimulable (& always facilitate liquids if they are not stimulable).

How do you set up a cycles approach?

Take the first pattern from your list and choose one phoneme (sound) from that pattern. Work on that first sound for 60 minutes (two 30-minute sessions, four 15-minute sessions, or however your schedule works). Then, choose another phoneme from that pattern and work on it for an additional 60 minutes.

Which group of clients are targeted for cycles training?

The cycles approach targets phonological pattern errors and is designed for children with highly unintelligible speech who have extensive omissions, some substitutions, and a restricted use of consonants.

What is the purpose of auditory bombardment?

Auditory Bombardment is an evidence/research based therapy procedure that Hillcrest speech language pathologists use on a regular basis to enhance phonological/sound awareness.
