The thalassemias are categorized into two broad disease groups: alpha-thalassemia and beta-thalassemia. Alpha-thalassemia is characterized by a decrease in or defective production of alpha-globin chains.

Is thalassemia major alpha or beta?

If either the alpha or beta part is not made, there aren’t enough building blocks to make normal amounts of hemoglobin. Low alpha is called alpha thalassemia. Low beta is called beta thalassemia. When the words “trait,” “minor,” “intermedia,” or “major” are used, these words describe how severe the thalassemia is.

Which thalassemia is major?

Thalassemia major is the most severe form of beta thalassemia. It develops when beta globin genes are missing. The symptoms of thalassemia major generally appear before a child’s second birthday. The severe anemia related to this condition can be life-threatening.

What is beta Thalassaemia major?

People with beta thalassemia are at an increased risk of developing abnormal blood clots. Beta thalassemia is classified into two types depending on the severity of symptoms: thalassemia major (also known as Cooley’s anemia) and thalassemia intermedia. Of the two types, thalassemia major is more severe.

Is beta thalassemia major dominant?

Beta-thalassemia major and beta-thalassemia intermedia are usually inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, which means both copies of the HBB gene in each cell have mutations .

Is beta thalassemia the same as thalassemia minor?

Beta thalassemia trait is inherited from one’s parents, like hair or eye color. Normally, beta thalassemia trait does not cause any health problems. Beta thalassemia trait is also known as beta thalassemia minor.

How can you tell the difference between major and minor thalassemia?

If you inherit:

  1. One mutated gene, you’ll have mild signs and symptoms. This condition is called thalassemia minor or beta-thalassemia.
  2. Two mutated genes, your signs and symptoms will be moderate to severe. This condition is called thalassemia major, or Cooley anemia.
