Usually, these abnormalities develop in the fetus, or in a newborn baby. AVMs can occur anywhere in the body.

Spinal arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a rare, abnormal tangle of blood vessels on, in or near the spinal cord. Without treatment, spinal AVM can permanently damage your spinal cord. Oxygen-rich blood normally enters your spinal cord through arteries, which branch into smaller blood vessels (capillaries).

In most patients, the AVM will be cured in 1-3 years after treatment. Such radiosurgery is most useful for smaller AVMs, but can be used selectively for the treatment of larger AVMs.
What does an arteriovenous malformation look like?
An image of an AVM will show many winding, bending arteries and also wide veins. The blood will be seen to flow very quickly from the arteries to the veins. MRI gives more detailed pictures of the size and location of an AVM inside the body.
