Why is food and drinks not allowed in the lab?

Introduction Eating, drinking, gum chewing, or similar activities within laboratories where teaching or research involving toxic substances take place, can result in the accidental ingestion of hazardous materials (chemical, biological, and/or radiological).

Is water allowed in lab?

Cups, water bottles and other food and beverage items are not allowed in laboratories. Food and liquids used for research that are stored in the laboratory must be labeled “Not for human consumption”.

Why should you eat in a lab?

Chemical exposure can occur through ingestion of food or drink contaminated with chemicals. This type of contamination can occur when food or drinks are brought into a lab or when food or drinks are stored in refrigerators, freezers, or cabinets with chemicals.

Can you chew gum in the lab?

You can’t chew gum in the laboratory. OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogen standard says that “eating, drinking, smoking, applying cosmetics or lip balm, and handling contact lenses are prohibited (in the lab).” It says nothing abut gum, throat lozenges, hard candy, or even chewing tobacco.

Are beverages allowed in lab as long as they are in containers with lids?

Travel mugs or water bottles with lids are appropriate for liquid transport. It is not permissible to eat or drink while passing through the laboratory or research area. Rinsing of beverage or food containers in designated laboratory sinks is not allowed.
